When the physical man is sick and diseased, his mind becomes weakened and is more easily preyed upon by the evil of the intermediate worlds, but a healthy body and mind invariably bring healthy thoughts.
It is a revelation to an ordinary man to enter a group of men engaged or interested in physical culture, for a fit body is dynamic. It radiates health and attracts people who have been unable to lead natural lives.
A healthy man whose liver is normal invariably radiates good nature in the morning. When the minute brain at the tip of the liver is out of order, man becomes suspicious of his fellow men. He is restless and sluggish, and his mind does not seem to function normally. On arriving at the office one quickly notices if the boss is “liverish” and if so, he expects a “spot of trouble.” Likewise, when the upper third of the lungs is not normal, man is subject to mental depression and a high state of nerves. Again the so-called spiritual “man of the cloth” sometimes finds that his organs of generation are out of order. A healthy body is needed to combat the evil of the world. The body that constantly preys upon the mind causes its owner to talk about “ill health,” not health.
The student will also observe a vampire class, who have generally led indolent and selfish lives. I know of a lady, provided for by other people, who is supposedly engaged in good works. When she entered a room in which there were eighteen people, she came in pale and worn. Five minutes afterward she left, glowing with health, but those remaining all felt like rags, and simultaneously gave sighs of relief at her departure. I have never noticed this vampirism, except among people who were selfish and self-centered. Old people often seek the society of youth for the stimulation which youth and health bring, and a list of crimes some day may be placed under the category of “old age.” Yet I have never seen this vampirism in old people who had the “light,” for they radiated the “spirit which is within,” as the healthy athlete radiates physical vitality and magnetism.
In Yoga we begin to perceive distinct differences in types of humanity, and we grade people according to these canons of observation, although this sometimes causes us much torture of the mind.
In beginning the study of Yoga one should start with a long period of physical culture; the second step is the observation and analysis of others, not calling upon the use of the “third eye,” which is developed later. The way in which a man stands gives you an index to his character, just as the placement of the ear gives the sign of the criminal. One is taught self-protection through observing these higher and lower types in society.
As a man thinks in his heart, so is his body actuated, and the man who is telling you a falsehood gives himself away. At the end of this second period the teacher says, “Go and get knowledge from all sources, for that reason you came to this world; hence gather experience. Seek and pray for knowledge, and the light of Truth will enter the mind.”
It will be many centuries before man realizes that the wisdom teaching of Jesus, “Agree with thine adversary quickly, whilst thou art in the way with him,” and “A soft answer turneth away wrath,” are fundamental truths. Witness the jujitsu expert, who easily overcomes his adversary by softness in his physical attack. It is far better after a fight to shake hands, seek to forget all differences of opinion, and start friendship anew, for the law of opposition is the law of attraction, and it links two persons together in the case of quarrels.
